Chesterfield sofas are an iconic design, that exude class.
There are many stories explaining how the Chesterfield sofa came to have its name, but none of them can be verified.

According to a post in the Independent, a furniture maker named Paul Fleming states that the origin of the name is still a mystery.
“Originally chesterfield just meant a sofa or even a piece of furniture,” he said. “We have been making them for years and we have been to museums and done lots of research and we can’t find a single piece of paper to explain its origin”.

What is agreed on though is the look of the sofa. The Chesterfield sofa has arms and a back that are the same height, and that roll back on themselves.
Plus the classic style has buttons placed along the arms and back of the sofa (sometimes the seat of the sofa too), that create a distinct tufted/quilted look.

The colour of the Chesterfield sofa looks so much stronger in velvet. Velvet adds a richness and depth to an already luxurious design.
Both this particular green Chesterfield sofa and the purple colour of the first image – which you can find at The Original Sofa Company, look stunning in velvet.

In a room with so much character and rich/warm furnishings, the sofa could not of been anything other than a fully tufted Chesterfield sofa. Any other sofa design would have let the grand, almost Gothic style of room down.

As you can see from all ten images, the studding on the Chesterfield sofa can vary. Up against the grey velvet in the image above, the studding across the front of the seat and arms makes the sofa look like a truly classic Chesterfield.

This room is a great mix of classic and retro designs. I particularly love the armchair, with its take on the Chesterfield’s rolled back arms and tufted/quilted padding.

The corner sofa is still a very popular design, especially within larger homes. The velvet material and teal colour adds life and a feeling of comfort within this otherwise neutral looking room.

The exposed turned legs placed upon brass castors, are also a classically beautiful design of the Chesterfield sofa.
