TORBYD 59-14 – Alicja Kotlarek

TORBYD 59-14 Architectural Intervention for an Ice Rink edifice.

“They say that brutalistic architecture starts to appear as magnificent ruins before the buildings are even completed. The state of ruin is like already prescribed in this style because its aesthetics gave new outlines of a language of visible steel framing, intentionally untreated materials and rigidity in forms. The subject of this work is an abandoned edifice of an ice rink, a typical example of Polish brutalistic architecture from the 1960/70’s. The profound research revealed that history and unusual origins of the site play particular role in my project. A successful and clever struggle to construct the ice rink for professional hockey team became a common aim that united the community of my hometown. It seemed that this story deserves a reaction. The project seeks to find a proposition to honour the act of solidarity of the civil residents of a usual Polish city.

“The architectural intervention that I proposed became a subject of my MA in Interior and Spatial Design (Chelsea College of Arts, UAL) study project, as well as for my critical research paper. I have been investigating social and architectural aspects of the site and completing the research about similar brutalistic structures.”
