Inspiration: Art Nouveau style

The Curious Department - thecuriousdepartment.com

Art Nouveau was one of the 20th Century’ most defining art movements. It influenced everything from visual culture to fine art, from design to architecture. It draws heavily on nature and celebrates elegant curves and ethereal, long, flowing lines. Natural materials and soft, muted colours feature heavily too.

Looking to the Art Nouveau movement for inspiration in your next home makeover? Then you’ve come to the right place! Below, we’ve hand-selected some of our favourite pieces to enhance your space. From amazing artwork to lovely lampshades, we’re sure you’ll find something you love:

Art Tapestries

If your room has a blank wall or two, consider hanging one of these gorgeous tapestries. They ooze elegance. We’ve fallen head over heels for this nature-inspired design by William Morris (bottom left) and think it will be a real talking point among guests (Blackthorn Tapestry from £28.82. Three size options available). Or, add a bit of romance into the room by selecting Gustav Klimt’s famous painting ‘The Kiss’ (price from £28.09, three size options available.)

Velvet Lampshade

A velvet lampshade is the perfect way to finish a cosy corner. Why not place this beauty on top of a metallic base and enjoy its shimmering velvet fabric as you settle down with a book? The pink floral print features opium poppies, a classic motif of the Art Nouveau period. The shade’s interior is lined with metallic gold to enhance the bulb’s gentle warm glow. (From £75, six sizes available. Options for both standing and ceiling shades. Wallpaper also available if you like the print-on-print look!)

Floral Wallpaper

Old-meets-new with this floral wallpaper. It has the vintage charm of an Art Nouveau floral pattern but with plenty of modern appeal. We’re big fans of the stylish illustrations and on-trend colour palette. We think this wallpaper is particularly perfect for a feature wall. You can have it custom printed to fit any wall and choose from several different materials to suit your space. (From £35/m2.)

Glass Pendant

The där lighting group clearly drew inspiration from the Art Nouveau period as they designed this stunning light pendant. It features ribbed curved glass with a rippled edge suspended from a polished nickel frame. We can imagine this hanging in the centre of a dining room, it’s a real showstopper! (£238.80.)

Advertising Poster

You can’t do Art Nouveau without displaying an advertising poster (or two) from the period. We recommend getting one printed onto metal, it’s a fantastic medium for this type of artwork—brighter colours turn out super vivid and vibrant. They really stand out. We recommend placing a couple of metal prints on a floating shelf, surrounded by carefully curated curios. Our two favourites: Tournee du Chat Noir and Motocycles Comiot, arguably two of the most iconic designs.

Address Plaque

Instantly increase your curb appeal with this pretty address plaque (£59). Display your love of Art Nouveau to guests from the minute they step up to your front door! It’s cast from solid English aluminium, decorated with a floral motif typical of the period and finished in a paint colour of your choice (there are seven different options to choose from). It’s fully lacquered making it weatherproof.
